Au Pied de Cochon Cabane à Sucre

On almost every list of Sugar Shacks you must visit is Martin Picard’s Au Pied de Cochon Cabane à Sucre and Cabane d’à côté.

Montreal chef Martin Picard’s Sugar Shack Au Pied du Cochon is located around an hour north of Montreal in Mirabel. Opened in 2009, the ‘Cabane à Sucre’ is the same name as Martin Picard’s acclaimed restaurant (Au Pied du Cochon) and just as memorable an experience. The Caban a Sucre was so successful they opened Cabane d’à côté or ‘the Shack Next Door’ to accommodate the demand in 2018.

The Cabane d’à côté is meant to be like visiting a friend’s cottage. You enter into the open kitchen and see the small dining area (of around 40 seats).

It really is a family feel and the open kitchen allows you to see everything being made. And if your lucky you can even help out in the kitchen.

Dining is family-style with picnic tables with leaves in the middle for the ever-popular maple sugar.

A great thing is that the Cabane d’à côté is open during the summer too.Au Pied de Cochon Cabane à Sucre

Famous for his poutine with foie gras, Martin Picard’s sugar shack you will be served pea soup with fois gras and pancakes fried in duck fat. Of course, everything is smothered in maple syrup. Both locations use items from the Au Pied du Cochon orchard and farms. Food is cooked on a wood oven and keeps to classic recipes with a modern twist.

Price:

A bit pricey the 2020 prices is around $70 for adults & $23.50 for kids aged 4 to 12. Kids 3 and under are free. It’s worth it because this sugar shack serves up some of the most elaborate Quebec dishes you can imagine.

Before you go:

  • Bring your rain boots. The Quebec weather can be wet and muddy. The parking lot can be full of mud and you will not want to ruin your footwear.
  • In an effort to reduce their ecological footprint, they no longer offer aluminum dishes for leftovers. If you want to take home leftovers, bring your own reusable dishes. If you forget, they provide compostable containers for sale.
