Being Canadian the Beaver is a beloved symbol of our country. Dating back to the 1600s fur trade, Canadians have always paid tribute to the beaver, from our currency to our coat of arms. So, when I heard about Green Beaver toothpaste on Moms Meet, I right away recognized that it was likely a sustainable, natural (‘green’) product. That had to be good, right?

Green Beaver

If we’re really being honest, I was thinking toothpaste that tastes like green apple and orange – two of my kid’s favorite foods – may lead my kids to brushing their teeth more.

Who is the Green Beaver company?

Knowing nothing about the Green Beaver company, the first thing I did was a bit of digging. Of course, they are Canadian, but who are they & why do they exist?

Well, it’s a couple, Karen Clark (biochemist) and Alain Ménard (microbiologist) who founded the company in 2002 after they were shocked to find out how many chemicals are in our common household personal and cleaning products. They wanted to take their expertise and knowledge to make a difference by creating 100% natural and sustainable products.

If you’re looking for ways to support local, you’ll want to support their products that are made with organic Canadian ingredients that are edible, vegan and gluten-free, fluoride-free, biodegradable, cruelty-free, ecologically wild-crafted and recycled packaging.

What is Green Beaver natural toothpaste?

For my kids, we’ve had our share of visits to the dentist – my kids are on a first name basis with the entire staff!

Let’s talk flavor.

My youngest does not like anything that ‘picks’ her mouth. No spicy gum (meaning spearmint), no ‘spicy’ toothpastes either. The problem is she’s growing up and she needs the ‘real’ protection that you don’t find in the ‘safe to swallow’ kids toothpaste. Of course, she grabbed the bubblgum and strawberry flavors. It helps that the strawberry toothpaste is made with REAL strawberries and the bubblegum one with REAL cherries. It doesn’t stop there. The kids ones are made with birch extract xylitol, which acts as a natural sweetener. It stops the production of acid (which eats away teeth) and prevents a buildup of bacteria (which rots your teeth and causes cavities).

Now FINALLY there’s a toothpaste she likes and will use! A natural sweetener, xylitol helps in the absorption of calcium and the strengthening of your child’s teeth. It prevents the production of acid (which weakens tooth enamel) and reduces bacteria (which cause cavities).

We got to try the Green Beaver 100% natural, fluoride-free Naturapeutic & Flavour Collection Toothpastes of five flavors: green applezesty orangestrawberrybubblegum, and ultra-whitening fresh mint.

Green Beaver Natural Toothpaste

I have to say I personally am not a fan of the bubble gum type kid toothpastes because I find them too sweet. I wasn’t even going to try those, but figured I should at least once and to my surprise the kids loved it, and I did too!

We were all excited to try the orange and green apple Green Beaver natural toothpastes. I have to admit I am a product of my conditioning. What I mean is I have been raised where toothpaste IS mint. There aren’t other options for adults, so when I think of toothpaste, it HAS to be mint. This is a time I talked myself into trying these new ones. I liked the green apple, but I really liked the zesty orange – likely because I love citrus. Also, I found that it gave me an extra boost in the morning when I also infused orange essential oils in my bathroom.

In case your wondering the texture is similar to other natural toothpastes, so your kids won’t even know it’s any different. You’ll love how your teeth feel clean and polished afterwards.

For the big kids

Just to clarity, when I say big kids, I mean my teenager and husband who are concerned about the whiteness level of their teeth, but also scared about other whitening toothpastes that use harsh chemicals that make already sensitive teeth more sensitive. For me, I’m all about the enamel protection toothpaste they offer – and which I went out & bought after trying the others.

Green Beaver’s Ultra-Whitening Toothpaste contains papaya extract and has been clinically proven to whiten teeth naturally after just three days of use. This one was my big kids favorite.

green Beaver Sensitive Toothpaste

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you might want to try their other fluoride free toothpaste flavours: cinnamon, star anise, spearmint, cilantro mint, and frosty mint. I have to say I am the biggest fan of cilantro – but for some reason when I mentioned it to my husband, he vetoed it right away … did I mention her really does NOT like cilantro.

Will Green Beaver natural toothpaste really fight cavities?

If you have kids like mine who LOVE sweets, fighting cavities is something you have to always keep in mind with dental care. Since the 50’s fluoride has been added to water supplies in communities across North America. I can still smell the foamy fluoride treatments from the 80s. After having kids I found out they no longer do this. This is mostly because too much flouride can cause severe health problems, such as teeth discoloration, thyroid, neurological and cardiovascular problems. These health problems is one of the reasons we teach children not to swallow mouthwash or toothpaste.

So I am always worried about my kids getting enough fluoride to protect their teeth. You need fluoride and chemicals to protect your teeth, right? WRONG.

Green Beaver’s Natural Toothpastes are the ONLY toothpaste approved by Health Canada to prevent cavities and tooth decay without fluoride. They are also the only anticavity kids’ toothpastes that are safe to swallow (also approved by Health Canada). And as far as I know getting Health Canada approval is no small deal, since they have some of the strictest guidelines for approvals in North America, and possibly the world. See what using science can do!

For parents of really small kids Green Beaver natural fluoride-free toothpastes removes the stress of watching your kids like a hawk to make sure they don’t swallow or eat the toothpaste. This is something I had to be vigilant about after my kid ate half a tube of regular (non-natural) toothpaste as a toddler.

Added bonus – save the planet

For any Earth Rangers out there looking to save the planet, you’ll be happy to hear that Green Beaver toothpastes are made in Canada and packaged in recyclable materials from biodegradable ingredients.
